The 2018 Giro will start in Jerusalem. This will be the first time the race is going beyond traditional European borders to celebrate its 100th year of the race.
There will be an opening prologue and two road stages. The race is scheduled to start on May 4 with the time trial along the walls of Jerusalem. Stage 2 will go from Haifa to Jerusalem via the mountains. Stage 3 is set to go from Be’er Sheva to Eliat along the Red Sea.
From there will be a rest day in Italy. The rest of the route has yet to be announced. The race is planning to honor Gino Bartali who helped save hundreds of Jews from the Nazis during World War II. A movie has been made about his courageous feats, “My Italian Secret”.
