Tao Geoghegan Hart starting Stage 21
Tao demonstrates to be always at the top in every climb, winning the two stages at Piancavallo and Sestriere. Today, after a thrilling head to head with Jai Hindley in the final ITT in Milan, Tao conquered his first Giro d’Italia.
In the final time trial from Cernusco sul Naviglio to Milan, he beat Jai Hindley.
No one in history had ever won the Giro without ever having worn the pink jersey before the last stage. A great comeback after the crashing on the descent from Colle de Lys last year. He had arrived at the Giro thinking he had to help Geraint Thomas, who was taken out by a water bottle. He earned the rank of captain on the hardest climbs (first in Piancavallo and Sestriere) and won the most important victory of his career. For the first time in the history of the Grand Tours, two riders reached the last stage with the same time before the final time trial.
Filippo Ganna, winner of the stage
The last stage was a flat time trial of 15.7 km. Filippo Ganna conquered the last test, stopping the clock at 17’16 “in front of the Duomo. Second at 31 “Campenaerts, third Dennis at 32″. Great performance. The two challengers leave last for the Trofeo Senza Fine, after shaking hands with sportsmanship before the start. Geoghegan Hart immediately does better than Hindley. 12’06” at the intertime, he loses the Australian, behind the intermediate finish for 22″. At the finish line under the Duomo the gap is definitive, 39″ , Geoghegan Hart can celebrate.
