BFF12: Bicycle Film Festival New York, June 28-July 1
Bicycle enthusiasts from around the world will flock to New York City this Summer for the Bicycle Film Festival annual celebration of the world’s best invention: the bicycle. Films will be screened at Anthology Film Archives at 32 Second Avenue.
The BFF was born in New York and is proud to be coming back in the year of so much cycling buzz here at home. The BFF’s popularity and continued growth has evolved hand in hand with the unprecedented boom in urban cycling internationally. From its roots in New York, the BFF has grown into a multi-faceted, global event that will travel to over 25 cities this year, from Milan to Tokyo, Moscow to Mexico City.
In 2001 Brendt Barbur, Founding Director, was compelled to start the Bicycle Film Festival after being hit by a bus while riding his bike in New York. He was inspired to turn this negative experience into a positive one, and created a festival that celebrates the bicycle through music, art, and film. The festival merges many creative communities, including fashion, music and art, as well as various bicycling communities – road cycling, mountain biking, fixed gear, BMX, cyclocross – over a shared passion for bike riding.
“Bike Share. Commuting. The road racing spike!” says Barbur. “This is the biggest year ever for bikes in New York!”
Feature film highlights include the World Premiere of the feature length LINE OF SIGHT (Dir. Benny Zenga) by legendary cycling cinematographer Lucas Brunelle, and SHAY ELLIOT: CYCLE OF BETRAYAL (Dir. Martin Dwan) about Ireland’s first professional cyclist and the incredible events surrounding his career and life.
BFF12 showcases fabulous and emotive short films from around the world, including: CANDY RIDES (Dir. Jason Giampietro), exploring our love of bikes and how it fits with love itself; BOY (Dir. Justin Chadwick), about love and loss, starring respected British actor Timothy Spall; the inspirational SISTER SESSION (Dir. Helen Habakuk, Doris Taaker, & Brett Astrid Vomma), showing the first time women got to compete at a major BMX event (Simple Session). To see what happens when a bike messenger gets involved in sex, drugs, and troublesome women, watch IN PULSE (Dir. Bjoern Adelmeier ).
BFF STREET PARTY: June 30, 12-6pm at 2nd and 2nd
