Over 300 of the nation’s top masters riders registered for the six-day event which, which takes place on what is considered the country’s fastest velodrome, is likely to see several age-group records broken.
The first national titles were in the individual pursuits. Michael Miller (Morgantown, PA/Chester County Cycling Foundation) bested Gregory Pent (Boulder, CO/RockyMounts~Izze Racing) in the men’s 40-44 3-kilometer individual pursuit. In the 35-39 2-kilometer individual pursuit, Anne Donley (Boulder, CO/Boulder Orthopedics) won the national title ahead of Ingrid Alongi (Boulder, CO/Naked Women’s Racing p/b TriBella/Naked Women’s Racing p/b Tribella).
In the women’s 45-49 time trial, Gea Johnson (Scottsdale, AZ/Team Green Choice/Team RPM/Airpark Bikes) clocked in at 38.064 to claim the national title while Victor Copeland (Rancho Santa Fe, CA/Eddie B Cycling) was the fastest in the men’s 70+ event with a 37.855.
Thomas O’Rourke (Westbloomfield, MI/Cadieux Bicycle Club) added to his collection of Stars-and-Stripes jerseys when he posted a 42.043 in the men’s 75-59 race against the clock, and Bobby Walthour IV (Carmel, CA/) won the men’s 45-49 kilometer time trial in 01:07.0.
Keith Macbeth (Santa Cruz, CA/San Jose Bicycle Club) clocked a 11.470 in the men’s 60-64 flying 200-meter sprint qualifying round to unofficially best the age-group record set by fellow American Victor Copeland in 2004. In the final of the men’s 60-64 sprint, Macbeth was fourth.
Bill Ziegler (Oceanside, CA/San Diego Cyclo Vets) claimed the gold medal after a heated final match with silver medalist Butch Stinton (Castle Rock, CO/Mix1). Mark Rodamaker (Los Altos, CA/LTO Velo) then bested Macbeth in the bronze medal round and John Fitzgerald (Santa Ana, CA/Veloce Santiago) rounded out the podium in fifth.
