Master’s touch to shape Granfondo Gimondi trophy

A bronze sculpture celebrates Felice’s triumph at Tour de France 1965.

The upcoming 19th Granfondo Internazionale Felice Gimondi-Bianchi is to be held May 10th.  The location (Bergamo and its landscapes), the amazing courses (short 89,4km / medium 128,8 km / long 162,1 km), the event (50 years of Felice Gimondi victory at 1965 Tour de France with a beautiful celebration jersey), the permanence (the biggest and nicest one at Bergamo’s Lazzaretto, 10.000 sqm), the high quality standard (under the guidance of organizer Giuseppe Manenti of G.M. Sports), the 130th anniversary of Bianchi, the most historic cycling brand.

Special awards to be delivered to any category’s winner and medals for all participants will be precious and unique as well. Well-known Master-goldsmith and sculptor for over 30 years, Antonino Rando, hand-made them at his lab in Almé (Bergamo).

The relationship between Granfondo Gimondi and M° Rando goes back a long time: “I always followed the event, I love cycling, sports and bikes. So, I became Gimondi’s close friend and still I am”.

Rando works, bring forth movement in dynamic sculptures and jewels mirroring contemporary art. “The trophy I made arose from previous ones, displaying Bergamo monuments as a symbol of Gimondi’s town. I also restored the graphic of Salvarani jersey Felice was wearing 50 years ago. I basically looked for a perfect merger amid memory and reality, event and recurrence”.

M° Rando took care of the special wax technique to shape the trophy personally. “Bronze melting process makes it possible to produce copies for the event. The silver medals are to be produced with same graphic layout afterwards”.

The Granfondo Felice Gimondi-Bianchi link with arts goes beyond tradition. All previous editions strengthened the bond to make the event unforgettable: the beauty of M° Rando’s trophy aims to add a cultural value to the event.
