France 2 has done a report on how cyclists are getting around the Biological Passport via micro-dosing. They tested EPO, blood transfusions, corticosteroids and human growth hormone micro-doses.
The Athletes for Transparency along with WADA did a 29 day test on 8 athletes who were supervised.
The amateur athletes did VO2 max testing before starting the tests. They also did physical tests on a stationary bike and a 3,000 meter run. They micro-dosed for a month with EPO and other popular methods. They were then re-tested and were found to have improved significantly.
There was approximately a 6.1% improvement in the VO2 max test. The stationary bike saw 2.1% increase over 14k. The 3,000m run showed a 2.8% average improvement.
Some of the amateur athletes tested were astonished at the results from just two micro-doses.
The micro-dose analyses showed that the athletes would not have been caught within the parameters of the biological passport.
France 2 concluded the experiment shows that “a clean passport is not necessarily the passport of a clean athlete.”
