Lampre-Merida’s sprinter claims the first seasonal win ahead of the Giro d’Italia with Northwave Extreme. Bilbao maintains the overall leadership
For the second consecutive season, Italian Sacha Modolo is finding in Turkey his best ahead of the Giro d’Italia. Last year, Lampre-Merida’s 28-year-old had claimed the first seasonal success in stage 5, before conquering two stage wins in the “Corsa Rosa”. This year the Venetian sprinter celebrated his first win in 52nd Tour of Turkey’s stage 4 (Seydisehir – Alanya 187 Km), ahead of Daniele Colli (Nippo-Vini Fantini) and Marco Zanotti (Parkhotel Valkenburg CT), on Wednesday April 27th.
Equipped with Extreme shoes, Modolo gave the third win in four stages thanks to Roberto Ferrari’s excellent job, after successes claimed by teammate Przemyslaw Niemiec in the opening day and Pello Bilbao in stage 2. In addition, the Caja Rural Basque maintained the overall lead with 0:05 and 0:13 advantages on teammates José Goncalves and David Arroyo, second and third respectively.
Northwave’s riders were in the spotlight also in Tour de Romandie stage 1 (Mathod – Moudon 100,5 Km), in Switzerland, shortened due to snow. Lithuanian Ramunas Navardauskas finished fifth in the sprint won by German Marcel Kittel (Etixx-QuickStep) ahead of Italian Niccolò Bonifazio (Trek-Segafredo) and Swiss Michael Albasini (Orica-GreenEDGE). Two more athletes equipped with Extreme shoes entered the day’s top-10: Davide Cimolai (Lampre-Merida) and Amstel Gold Race’s winner, Enrico Gasparotto (Wanty-Groupe Gobert), placed sixth and eighth, respectively.
