The first day of the UCI Track World Championships is history, and so is first rainbow jersey conquered by Northwave in Apeldoorn (Netherlands) thanks to local hero Kirsten Wild, who grabbed the gold medal in the Scratch race, on Wednesday February 28th.
The 35-year-old Dutch rider mastered one of the more unpredictable races in the Worlds program, attacking the field with 6 laps remaining. Wild crossed the finish line solo, preceding Belgian Julien D’Hoore and Dane Amelie Dideriksen, while Brit Katie Archibald and defending champion Italian Rachele Barbieri – Wild’s teammates at Team Wiggle High5 – finished sixth and ninth respectively.
Filippo Ganna and Simone Consonni helped the Italian quartet to qualify for the bronze final in the Team Pursuit, scheduled today, Thursday March 1st, against Germany. In the semi-final against Denmark, the Italian riders clocked in 3’54”.884, new Team Pursuit National Record.
