The product was created by Dr. Roanne Houck while she was working on her naturopathic medical degree. She had seen an article about financial losses in the Colorado ski industry and saw an opportunity to help people who suffer from altitude sickness. In 2003 she trademarked her first Acli-Mate Mountain Sport Drink formulation based on a natural remedy for altitude sickness and to improve energy at elevation.
The company is based in Gunnison, Colorado. Their products are 100% natural and contain no gluten, caffeine, soy, dairy, egg, yeast, high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors, flavors or preservatives.
They are the official sport supplement of Crested Butte Mountain Resort and the official sport drink of the Alpine Orthopaedics Professional Cycling Team. Additional sponsorships include Team Crested Butte (elite adventure racing), Wendy Fisher pro skier, Duncan Callahan (Leadville 100 Run race winner) and numerous other athletes.
Director of the High Altitude Performance Lab at Western State College in Gunnison has run a number of studies at the lab with both recreational and elite athletes involving Acli-Mate drinks.
