The first stage of the Tour Down Under at Adelaide Riverbank was under heavy rain. But Italian Alberto Bettiol won the stage despite the conditions. His time was 6’19” with an average speed of 52 km/h.
He has an 8 second lead heading into tomorrow’s stage from Tanunda.
Bettiol said he plans on keeping the ochre jersey at Mount Lofty on Sunday before the Ziptrak Stage 1 Tanunda to Tanunda pedals off, as 139 riders started the time trial with more than half the peloton enduring soaking rain.
