Colombian cyclist Mauricio Soler Hernandez is in a hospital in an induced coma. During the 6th stage of the Tour of Switzerland he crashed into a spectator. He lost consciousness, broke his ankle, fractured his skull and has a hematoma of the brain. He’s been put on a breathing machine because his lung is also affected. There were no obvious obstacles at that portion of the course and it’s not yet understood what caused the crash. His injuries are serious but the doctors have not said that his life is in any danger.
He was expected to race the Tour de France next month where he had the polka dot jersey in 2007.
The spectator was not seriously hurt.
