Doug Shapiro Passing

Doug Shapiro, 1989 Rocky Mountain News Classic

Doug was a pro cyclist on several pro teams including 7Eleven, Coors Light and the former Kwantum Hallen Team which has evolved into Visma Lease-a-Bike. He also raced as an amateur on the Mengoni team along with Canadian Steve Bauer. He was on the 1980 Olympic team but because of the boycott, didn’t get to race that.

He succumbed to his injuries from a climbing accident near Mendocino, California where he lived. His body was found near Portuguese Beach by a passerby. There are rugged cliffs in the area.

In 1984 he won the Coors International Bicycle Classic and in 1985 raced the Tour de France with the first American team to do so.

He was elected into the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.

After cycling, he started Shapiro & Associates which provided bicycle witness services and worked with lawyers specializing in personal injury, as well as insurance companies, manufacturers and others who were involved in bike accident litigation.

Doug was 65 years old.
