Eddy Merckx Calls for Lifetime Bans for Motorized Doping

He described motorized doping as a worse offense than performance enchancing drugs. It’s more brazen and even more serious than chemical doping.

He wants the offenders to be suspended for life. He said that from what he learned about the incident with Van den Driessche, this wasn’t the first time. “For me, it’s the worst thing you can do. You might as well go by motorcycle.”  On the Koppenberg, Van den Driessche finished second, and it didn’t seem normal to him.

“That’s nothing to do with cycling anymore. That’s motorcycling. They have to go riding with [Valentino] Rossi.”

He was asked if he thought this was rampant but he hopes not.

He has an electric bike, but he’s retired from competition, much older now and uses it just for leisure rides.
