Eddy Merckx underwent preventative heart surgery on Thursday. He had a procedure done because of an arythmia. His heart had been beating less than 40 beats a minute since he was young. He wanted to avoid any possible noctural problems. The device electronically stimulates his heart to keep it regular. The surgery gives his peace of mind. At age 67 he still rides his bike regularly and should be able to resume riding within two weeks.
