Yates held the pink jersey for thirteen days before Froome and Team Sky put an end to it. He had just three more days to go. Yates ended up 38th in GC on the last day in Rome.
It’s being said that because Yates hit the wall he is riding clean. And because Froome, who was dragging all through the race but then suddenly came on strong in the end is not. Froome’s “adverse analytical finding” for Salbutamol last year is still under investigation. So many fans are jaded by previous doping that it’s difficult to know if Froome deserves the win or not. Past “champions” like Merckx and some others have been put forth on pedestals though some of them doped during their time as well, though the controls and testing were not what they are today.
The inconsistencies coming from Team Sky in recent years have contributed to the controversy and the skepticism.
