Leopard Trek & Radio Shack to merge in 2012

On Monday the Schleck brothers announced that in 2012 their Leopard Trek team will merge with the American Radio Shack team. The new name will be RadioShack-Nissan-Trek. Team Leopard will continue to exist.

Yohann Bruyneel wants to have a team to dominate cycling.  Not surprisingly, Alberto Contador is not happy and has said this group in the grand tours will be formidable and difficult to beat.  It’s being called the Dream Team.

Radio Shack is considered one of the more dense teams for stage races but has been lacking a leader.  Adding the stars from Team Leopard will round out the team formation.  Bruyneel has said that this structure can dominate cycling for years to come.  Radio Shack won 30 races in 2011.  With Cancellara and the Schlecks, he hopes the team can also win the Classics as well as the grand tours.

Some are calling this a potentially invincible armada.

So far there are 14 riders confirmed for the new formation:

Leopard-Trek: Andy Schleck, Frank Schleck, Fabian Cancellara, Jakob Fuglsang, Daniele Bennati, Robert Wagner

Radio Shack: Janez Brajkovic, Haimar Zubeldia, Andreas Kloden, Chris Horner, Jesse Sergent, Matthew Busche, Ben King, Nelson Oliveira
