LIEGE-BASTOGNE-LIEGE 2017 VALVERDE, KING IN THE ARDENNES

Ans (Belgium), Sunday April 23th 2017 – Four days after winning his fifth Flèche wallonne, Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) dominated Liège-Bastogne-Liège for the fourth time in his career Sunday, equalling Moreno Argentin’s tally, only one shy of Eddy Merckx’s record. El Imbatido, once again winner ahead of Dan Martin, couldn’t contain his emotions on a day that began with a tribute to the late Michele Scarponi. For Valverde, this a third double Flèche-Liège after 2006 and 2015.

QUOTE FROM RACE WINNER
“The prizes from this victory go to Michele Scarponi’s family. This is the most special of my four wins on Liège-Bastogne-Liège, due to the circumstances. We worked a lot from kilometre 0 before getting the win with a strong attack in the final. It’s a race for the books of history after a perfect week. I think we were all at the limit in the end. Martin went very strong, I calculated my distance and decided I could go 500 metres from the finish. It was my time, I never doubted even when Albasini jumped in my wheel. I was able to catch Martin, take a breath for five seconds, and then sprint to the finish”.
