Nibali started the Giro’s last mountain stage 44 seconds behind Colombian climber Chaves. His Astana team set a ferocious pace on the Colle della Lombarda and then Nibali was able to attack. In his first attack, Chaves and Valverde went with him. On the second, Chaves was on his wheel but finally cracked. Uranhelped for a bit. Then Majka and Jungels caught Chaves, in hopes of catching Nibali, but Nibali was able to stay ahead and finished sixth.
