Nicolas Roche: Cycling Teaches You to See the World with New Eyes

Always at the side of Beking Values, the Irish champion comments on the TV highlights of this edition.
Monaco, 20 November 2023 – Since retiring from professional cycling, Nicolas Roche has become a true adventurer. From dancer to pioneer of the most authentic gravel, from the microphone of live TV broadcasts to the flagship of a U23 team he loves so dearly, his chameleon-like charm has won him fans all over the world. It is not only his Monegasque residence that brings him closer to Beking’s project, but also a genuine commitment to the event’s core values, including the role of the bicycle in his life.
“The bike is part of me,” he explains. “I still train four or five times a week. There is never enough time, but I never miss the chance to get out there – even for an hour or so – because I need it, it gives me stability. Cycling is a bit like escaping from the problems of existence and it makes you feel calm. When I’m feeling good, I want to go out on my bike, and even when I’m having a bad day: it’s something that goes beyond me. It helps me psychologically, but also physically, I want to stay healthy. Besides, I have no choice… I like to eat too much! “

Roche also touched on the fundamental role of cycling, if only for physical well-being and a sustainable approach to urban mobility, but there is much more to it than that. “This process is already underway,” he stressed, “so many people have started cycling, especially after the pandemic, to get to work, either for environmental reasons, for convenience or to get some exercise. Today, people are more aware of environmental issues and the well-being of the planet. As well as the need to exercise to take care of themselves”.

A true gravel enthusiast, the Irish champion confirmed how pleasantly impressed he is that Valtteri Bottas, with whom he shares a passion for off-roading, has also joined the Beking family. “I often see Valtteri around the world enjoying the bike. A high-profile athlete like him is very good for cycling in general and the gravel environment in particular. We often get together for a beer and a chat and it’s nice to share those moments. That is what cycling is: a lot of smiles and a sense of community”.

This year, fans will also get to see him on television, commentating on the highlights of the event: another role that suits him and makes him a passionate ambassador for Beking’s mission. “Cycling has introduced me to the world and to people,” he concluded. “It teaches tolerance, rigour, planning and helps you understand goals! It makes you responsible, even in defeat, it teaches you to remain humble. I owe everything to this sport”.

Nicolas will challenge some of his former colleagues in the Pro-Am, in which they will also take part: Sonny Colbrelli, Manuel Quinziato, Francesco Castellacci, Oliviero Troia, David Tanner and Maximilian Guenter with their respective teams.
