Other sports may finally be revealed in the olf Operation Puerto affair.
The Spanish courts demanded that the blood bags that were seized years ago be given to sports authorities. The Madrid Court of Appeals has ordered that the contents of the blood bags be given to the Royal Spanish Cycling Federation, WADA, International Cycling Union and Italian National Olympic Committee to avoid “the danger that other athletes may be tempted to dope”.
The court annuled the decision made in April 2013 to destroy 211 bags of blood and plasma which had been ordered for a right to privacy. Doctor Fuentes had originally been sentenced to one year in prison and four years of prohibition in practicing sports medicine. They decided that that blood used in transfusions is not a doping drug and the doctor is not guilty of an offense against public health.
This latest verdict is final and cannot be appealed. However the statute of limitations is ten years, which is about up. So whatever other athletes are named, may not face suspensions. Many have since retired anyway.
