Jonathan Vaughters admits to having doped during his cycling career (he’s admitted this previously). Now he has written an opinion article in the New York Times asking for stronger anti-doping rules. He wants athletes to have a level playing field and wants athletes to not have to make the decision again to dope. He says they should be able to have “the ability to live their dreams without compromising their morals”. He’s sorry that he made the decision to dope. He said his guilt is what was behind his somewhat early retirement and the start of a team where racing clean was more important than winning.
The Garmin-Sharp team is tested weekly. Garmin rider Hesjedal won the Giro d’Italia this year and the whole team was the best team at the Tour de France last year.
Lying to the world and his family was awful for him. He wrote the article because he wanted people a perspective of what athletes are faced with.
