Vinokourov Wins Olympic Road Race

Alexander Vinokourov just won the Mens Olympic Road Race in London.  Following a break around the streets of London, he and Rigoberto Uran of Colombia broke away from that group. 200 meters from the line, he sprinted around the less experienced Uran and raced to the finish alone to take the win. Uran took the first Olympic silver road race medal for Colombia.  Vinokourov was not among the predicted winners of the gold medal. He’s 38 years old and from Kazakstan.  He’s had his share of worries over the years, a positive doping test in the 2007 Tour and difficulties with Astana, the team he created and built.  He’s proven himself today and should be very happy!

Cancellara, one of the expected winners, didn’t negotiate a turn well and ended up on the road.  He was nearly in tears after the finish.
