It turns out that one of the sponsors in the publicity caravan was spraying soap bubbles ahead of the race, which may have been what made the roads extra slippery. In the early ’90s, some sponsors in the publicity caravan were tossing out souvenir pins to the fans. Those pins got into the tires of the riders and support vehicles and also created a lot of problems.
